A Mother's Journey

Dearest Readers,

I received a letter the other day that I feel typifies the emotions and struggles of many dyslexic parents, and often, especially mothers.

Hi Lindsay,
My daughter is just starting 4th grade at the local public school. I feel like I've been working vigorously to help her since 1st grade and even more specifically since her diagnosis with 2 tutors/week, one using Linda mood bell. But sometimes I feel like we're not getting anywhere. I just spent $1000 for a 4 week summer school (just 9-12). It's for children w/dyslexia and is very well known and good. It just breaks my heart as her mom to see ALLLL subjects in school be SO difficult. I just keep thinking one day a light bulb will go off and reading will click. Of course it upsets her she's reading at a "baby" level when she sees what books she has to read vs her peers. And she's self conscious about all the intervention we are doing...
Yes, her school is willing to accommodate (I think). She has an IEP and is suppose to be getting accommodations but really...I am not sure she is, and how much, and if it's the right or best ones. School (since this is where she spends the majority of her awake life) needs to be better for her. I would love for some help in steering us in the right direction. I feel very overwhelmed, to be honest. There is just so much. I am getting so much from every direction and it's like I want to do it all, but I simply can't, and neither can she.

The story of this hard working and loving mom can be echoed by so many devoted parents. I intimately empathize and sympathize with her story. Advocating for your child is not for the faint of heart and I applaud her for her desire and effort to understand and help her child. A child's learning disability will not go away, but there are ways, tools and strategies to ease some of the struggle. I will continue to talk about some of those ways in this blog and encourage you to reach out to your own LD coach or professional who can help guide you through your own personal journey.
